1. REAL TIME MOBILE GPS FOR A BUS TRACKING SYSTEM (GUP - TIER 1 2016) from 1 July 2016 - 30 June 2018 (RM50,000)

Executive Summary

Lack of appropriate information system for transportation, particularly for students who use buses for commuting is causing lot of anxiety among them. Students wait for long time at the bus station expecting the bus to arrive as per the schedule. The delay in arrival time of a bus is a major issue at bus terminals for students traveling to classes. Students have to wait for long time in the bus terminal without even knowing when the bus will arrive. So, a systematic tracking system is required to show out the current location of a bus and the dynamic arrival time. The information regarding bus services is provided through traditional ways such as information board, maps, pamphlets and so forth. Usually, the information board of bus services area located all around university on a strategic location. But, with large scale of UTM campus area (1222 hectares), it cannot cover the whole area of campus to deliver the information. At present there is no such system in place for the benefit of the students who take buses for commuting. It would be good to have such a system like in railway stations which provide information about the arriving and departing trains [1].


The recent technological advances in mobile communication, computing and geo-positioning technologies have made real-time transit vehicle information systems an interesting application area. The mobile device provides the user with the expected arrival time of the next bus at the bus stop based on the user’s current position [2].


The proposed system will consist of two Android based mobile applications for bus drivers and passengers, and web server. The bus drivers’ mobile application module will be developed to calculate the arrival time and the delay time of a particular bus using the coordinates retrieved from the GPS module in their smartphone. The information will be provided to the passengers via their smart phones using another mobile application. Passengers also able to keep updating with the current location of the expecting bus, and plan their journey more efficiently without spend longer time waiting for a bus by using web in real time.

TEKNOLOGI INOVASI UNTUK MEMETIK BUAH MATA KUCING YANG SELAMAT DAN MUDAH (IISJ 1/2016) from 15 July 2016 - 14 April 2017 (RM30,900)

Synopsis

Buah mata kucing (Dimocarpus longan) adalah sejenis buah-buahan tempatan bermusim dari Keluarga Sapindaceae dan menjadi pilihan untuk peminat buah tropika. Buah mata kucing yang menyerupai buah longan telah banyak diimport dari China dan Thailand oleh Malaysia pada setiap tahun dengan nilai puluhan juta. Walaubagaimanapun, penduduk Malaysia tetap lebih beminat dengan buah mata kucing tempatan berbanding import kerana mempunyai rasanya lebih manis dan berair. Selain itu, penggunaan bahan kimia terlarang dalam industri pertanian di Thailand bagi meningkatkan ketahanan dan kesegaran buah oleh petani asing, menimbulkan kebimbangan di kalangan orang ramai.


Pokok mata kucing turut banyak ditanam sekitar Johor terutama di Kawasan Kampung Redong, Segamat yang mampu memberi pulangan lumayan (RM 2.00- 3.00 sekilogram)kepada pengusaha dusun setiap kali musim berbuah. Dianggarkan , saiz pokok bersaiz sederhana mampu menghasilkan 200-250 kg sepokok setahun mengunakan kaedah pemetikan konventional menggunakan tangan. Satu hektar tanah mampu menampung 70-80 pokok yang menghasilkan 18000 kg setahun. Berbanding buah durian dan rambutan, buah mata kucing kurang mendapat sambutan pengusaha tani kerana kesukaran untuk proses pemetikan buah mata kucing Walaubagaimanapun, salah satu masalah utama bagi penanaman buah mata kucing ialah kaedah pemetikan yang sesuai memandangkan ketinggian pokok mata kucing mampu mencecah sehingga 20-30 meter dan saiz pokok seperti pemeluk oang dewasa. Disebabkan kesukaran ini dan memikirkan risiko memetik di kawasan tinggi, jumlah pemetik yang sanggup memanjat pokok tersebut sangat sedikit.


Oleh itu, kaedah yang lebih selamat dan mudah boleh diperkenalkan bagi meningkatkan produtiviti pemetikan buah mata kucing yang mampu menjana ekonomi untuk rakyat Johor bagi sektor pertanian. Kawasan Kampong Redong menjadi kawasan cadangan pengujian memandangkan pokok mata kucing telah ditanam sejak perlaksanaan program AID (Agriculture Input Diversification) pada awal 80 an lagi.

3. An improved and Centralised Aid and Relief Coordination via 2-way Intelligent Mobile Geospatial Reporting Algorithm for Flood Volunteers (FRGS 2015) from 1 April 2015 - 31 March 2016 (RM36,400)



Executive Summary

The recent flood disaster has given massive loss to the victims and damaged to certain areas. The instant aid and relief supplies from various sources have reduced the flood victims’ burden at some extent. However, there is an argument that arises on the effectiveness of the aid and relief coordination and distribution to the affected area. Various ad-hoc volunteer communities from non-profit organization (NGOs), private parties and individuals were formed to assist in aid and relief operations. Most of them reported their activities to separate channels such as their local community and public figure’s Facebook accounts. It was difficult, particularly for the authority and the volunteers’ teams to comprehensively track the areas that have been served, over served and under served in order to plan the types of aid and relief supports and actions that are still required to that affected area and the resources are not wasted. The aim is to establish algorithm for a 2-way mobile intelligent centralised reporting technique for flood volunteers to make informed decision in distributing aid and relief supports. This technique will use an integrated mobile and web based mapping platform to track the volunteers’ activities through intelligent reporting tool. The algorithm is anticipated able to consider dynamic geospatial paramaters regarding the movement of volunteer teams with the types of aid they had given and provide instant recommendation for the types of aid and relief that are still required for certain flood area based on their current or preferred locations. It will incorporate a tool for the flood victims to report the aid that they require during the post disaster recovery. This could benefit the related authority such as National Security Council (MKN) to manage the emergence of ad-hoc volunteer teams and to efficiently coordinate the distribution of aid and relief resources.
